AUSTIN, TX – August 26, 2008 – Motion Computing®, a leader in mobile computing and wireless communications, announced today that Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota implemented 350 Motion® C5 mobile clinical assistants (MCA) to extend the functionality of their MEDITECH Client Server Health Care Information System. Once fully implemented the device will improve workflow processes by streamlining clinical documentation and enabling a better bedside experience.

When Rapid City Regional Hospital began the search to help improve clinical documentation processes, it wanted a technological solution in each patient room but did not have space for larger technologies like desktop computers. After realizing a mobile device might be the answer, the C5 stood out among other solutions because it was designed with clinicians in mind. Motion Computing developed the C5 in collaboration with Intel® to easily fit into hospital environments and workflows.

Currently, the C5s are most often used by occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, social workers, dietary workers and case managers. Because these clinicians regularly move from floor to floor, they specifically need a portable solution to document patient interactions. The fact that the C5 is lightweight, simple to disinfect through the use of hospital sanitary wipes, and easily recognizes handwriting with the C5 pen-like stylus, made for a seamless adoption into the hospital’s workflows. Clinicians embraced the C5 because it mirrors the pen and paper process, yet offers immediate access to patient information throughout the hospital. The device also eliminates the need for transcription of data, giving clinicians more time by the patient bedside.

“Because the staff uses the device with so many different patients on different floors and rooms, the sealed case for easy cleaning, and highly portable design made the C5 the perfect choice for our highly mobile staff,” said Dick Latuchie, Regional Health Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer. Regional Health is the parent company of which Rapid City Regional Hospital is a member facility.

“In addition, the fact that the staff can check on status before entering a patient’s room and simply input clinical documentation has made the device invaluable in improving our workflow processes quickly and painlessly,” said Rita Haxton, Rapid City Regional Hospital Vice President of Patient Care.

The C5s are in demand at Rapid City Regional Hospital. The devices haven’t been completely deployed throughout the hospital, yet many clinicians are eager to try them out or test them in isolated situations. Usually staff is adverse to learning and deploying new technologies, yet the C5 is so easy to use, they have become a must-have device at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

““We are regularly pleased to hear enthusiastic feedback from the doctors, nurses and ancillary clinicians that have reported improved patient service, care and productivity attributable to using the C5 together with their software applications,” said Joel French, Motion Computing Vice President and General Manager of its Healthcare Business Group. “By providing this mobile solution, Rapid City Regional Hospital is improving the quality of care provided to patients while creating a better work environment for all staff.”
