Motion’s F5 Mobile Field Tool Selected by Sumner County Emergency Medical Services

Tablet PCs help EMS provider enhance care and improve annual billing by $2 million

AUSTIN, TX – Jan. 7, 2010
– Motion Computing®, a leading provider of integrated mobile computing solutions, today announced that Sumner County, Tenn. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has selected Motion® F5 Rugged Tablet PCs to enhance billing and patient data management processes. In addition to improving annual billing by $2 million, the EMS provider has seen significant benefits in patient care and records management.

Sumner County EMS provides 911 services to more than 150,000 residents in one of the state’s largest counties. With both Advanced Life Support ambulances and Basic Life Support units in service, Sumner County EMS employs 125 people and maintains an “A” rated service mark, the highest rating the state awards for public services.

With the need to improve both billing and patient data collection processes, Sumner County upgraded its software, and needed a new hardware solution to fully realize their ambitions. After an extensive review, Sumner chose the Motion F5 Tablet PC for its solid design tailored to highly mobile users that often compute in harsh environments, as well as the tablet’s useful integrated features such as a barcode scanner, RFID reader, finger print scanner and digital camera.

“We looked at a lot of different rugged computing devices that just didn’t meet our needs,” said Michael Cook, Sumner County’s IT manager. “Either they had too many moving parts, which are guaranteed to break in this environment, or they were too small to enable full utilization of the new software solution. When I saw the fully sealed design of the F5 with the virtual keyboard, large screen and integrated handle, I knew this was the right device.”

Since implementing the F5s, Sumner County EMS has experienced improvements in billing processes and patient care. Today, EMS technicians begin data collection and billing processes simultaneously. Upon transport, patients simply sign forms digitally on the tablets, and while in transit, the information is sent to hospital staff through a wireless connection, significantly reducing the time to treatment. At the hospital, receiving clinicians can also sign forms digitally, which are then immediately updated and sent to billing.

With the new software and tablet PC solution, Sumner County EMS has improved billing by $2 million annually and achieved a nearly 40 percent improvement in billing cycle times. “We are now billing back 96 percent which is incredible,” Cook said.

“Sumner County is an excellent model of how to seamlessly integrate a computing device into an emergency medical system,” said Mike Stinson, vice president of marketing, Motion. “Utilizing the F5 tablet PC to integrate both patient data collection and billings shows the real value of using technology directly at the point of care. The F5 has proven to be a robust, rugged and portable device able to withstand the rigors of harsh environments. We’re pleased to be a part of their achievement.”
